Shōki Gallery is an online gallery specializing in traditional Japanese scroll paintings from the Kinsei (early modern) through Kindai (modern) periods, spanning the Edo, Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa eras. Created to foster a deeper appreciation for Japanese art history, the gallery’s current collection focuses on literati painting (Nanga)—a rich pictorial tradition shared across East Asia.
We are glad to provide more detailed artwork information upon request. While operating primarily online, we are based in Manhattan, New York, and offer in-person viewings by appointment.

The colours of these pages
Every colour on these pages is a mineral pigment ground fine and laid on olive silk — azurite along the far crests, malachite through the hills, vermilion in the camellias, ochre in the straw and in the ground of every page.
Gunjō群青
Ground azurite. Only the crests of the far hills.
Rokushō緑青
Malachite: fine for hills and grass; left coarse, the dark camellia leaves — and what you have selected.
Shu朱
Vermilion. The camellias, on the tree and fallen — and the seal.
Taisha代赭
Red ochre. The young leaves of the wild cherry.
Ōdo黄土
Yellow ochre. The straw stacks, and the ground of every page.
Gofun胡粉
White made from shell. Cherry flowers, the sail, the light on the river.
