Secluded Dwelling by an Autumn Stream

Kanō Uhō was a seminal painter who guided Kyushu’s traditional literati art into the modern era. Early in his career, he trained under Hoashi Kyōu 帆足杏雨, a distinguished pupil of Tanomura Chikuden, while mastering Chinese classics and Japanese waka poetry to achieve the literati ideal of unifying poetry, calligraphy, and painting. A dedicated Zen practitioner, he studied at Bairin-ji Temple in Kurume and refined his technique under painter Moriyama Shōhan 守山湘颿 at Daiitoku-ji Temple in Nagasaki. Since 1906, Uhō resided in Tokyo and supported the painting academy of his fellow townsman Shirasu Shinka 白須心華. Uhō’s artistry became increasingly recognized in his later years, with work entering the collection of the Ministry of the Imperial Household.

Uhō’s passion for Zen Buddhism stemmed from a profound existential crisis despite mounting commercial fame midway through his painting career. He was eventually awarded the lay title of kōji by the Myōshin-ji branch of Rinzai Zen. This Zen perspective directly informs the painting’s theme of quiet detachment. In the inscription, Uhō presents reclusiveness not as a passive escape from public judgment, but as an active awakening to an enlightening Buddhist truth: that worldly praise and blame are empty illusions in a world of fundamental non-existence. By sealing off the valley to societal anxieties, the hermit turns away from impermanent ambitions and discovers that the natural world offers a far deeper, unshakeable spiritual abundance.

雲封谷口隔毀誉
室外風光紅葉初
隠趣却看豪富象
一林錦繡繞茅廬
Clouds seal the valley’s entrance, keeping worldly praise and blame away,
Beyond my door, the autumn view begins with red leaves on display.
Though simple this hermit’s life, it wears a look of grandest wealth—
With forests rich as woven brocade encircling my thatched hut.
